For Partying Just the Right Amount

If you want to celebrate without worrying about the morning after, this Mardi Gras Hurricane Mocktail is a perfect option. It captures the festive look and fruity sweetness of a classic Hurricane while remaining alcohol-free.
I’ve never been overly enthusiastic about typical Mardi Gras food—mainly because I don’t eat shrimp or other shellfish—but I can always appreciate a well-made Hurricane. Its vibrant color and balanced sweetness make it a crowd-pleaser, and this mocktail preserves that charm without the alcohol.
I stopped drinking about five months ago to help my gut heal, and making this Mardi Gras Hurricane Mocktail allowed me to keep enjoying the celebrations while staying sober. If you prefer an alcoholic version, you can omit the rum extract and add your favorite rum instead.
This recipe combines a mix of fruit juices with a touch of rum extract and almond extract for a nutty undertone. The result is refreshing, bright, and easy to make for two servings.

Mardi Gras Hurricane Mocktail
A fun, alcohol-free way to celebrate Fat Tuesday. If you want to spice it up, add a shot of rum to each serving.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup Fruit Punch
- 1/4 cup Tropicana Caribbean Sunset juice (or a substitute such as pineapple or papaya juice)
- 1/4 cup orange juice, plus a splash to top each drink
- 1 tablespoon maraschino cherry juice
- 5 drops rum extract (optional; found in the baking aisle)
- 2 teaspoons almond extract
- 2 lemon slices, plus extra for garnish
- Maraschino cherries for garnish
- 1/2 can sparkling lemon-lime soda or seltzer
- Ice
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice, except the sparkling soda and the garnishes.
- Shake well until chilled, then strain or pour the contents evenly into two glasses filled with ice.
- Top each glass with a splash of orange juice, then finish with the sparkling lemon-lime soda. Garnish with lemon slices and maraschino cherries.

Caribbean Sunset
Since giving up alcohol, I’ve discovered a new appreciation for juices. Tropicana’s Caribbean Sunset is one of my favorites—it adds tropical notes and a pleasant body to this mocktail. It’s widely available at many grocery stores; if you can’t find it, pineapple or papaya juice make excellent substitutes.

Notes: The rum extract contributes the distinctive Hurricane flavor without adding alcohol. The almond extract brings a subtle nuttiness that complements the fruit juices—use it sparingly to avoid overpowering the drink. If you prefer an alcoholic version, replace the rum extract with 1–2 ounces of light or dark rum per serving.
Presentation tip: Serve in tall glasses over fresh ice. Layer the sparkling soda gently on top for a light fizz, and finish with lemon slices and maraschino cherries for a traditional, festive look.
If you’re in the mood for something with a different regional twist, try a Wisconsin Old Fashioned for a spirit-forward winter cocktail—it’s a very different taste but worth exploring if you like classics.
