Retro Crossed Spoon Plate Stand Inspired by Anthropologie

Hello!

While browsing the Anthropologie online catalog recently, I spotted a crossed spoon plate stand that I loved. It inspired me to create a similar piece using some of my grandmother’s vintage spoons. I don’t usually make knock-off projects, but these spoons are sentimental, and I wanted a way to display and protect them.

I don’t have a complete set of my grandmother’s flatware, and with kids in the house we frequently lose utensils when clearing the table. Preserving these vintage spoons felt important, so I decided to repurpose them into a decorative plate stand. The handles have a pretty starburst pattern—I’m not sure of the exact pattern name, so if anyone recognizes it I’d love to know.

The original Anthropologie stand is silver, so I sprayed an existing clear plastic plate stand with a metallic Rust-Oleum paint to mimic that finish. The paint isn’t mirror-shiny, but it gives the plastic the look of metal and complements the spoons nicely.

To attach the spoons, I tried E6000 glue first, but it didn’t hold reliably in our hot climate. Hot glue worked immediately and kept the spoons firmly in place. I positioned them so they cross in front of the stand without covering too much of the plate.

I think the finished piece is a close match to the store version. I kept the spoons lower so they wouldn’t obscure the plate’s design. I’m using the stand to display one of my grandmother’s Franciscan Ware plates, which feels fitting and adds sentimental value.

This was a quick and inexpensive project—the spray paint cost around $4 and I already had the rest of the materials. It’s much cheaper than the original store piece and it elevates the plate off the surface while preserving family heirlooms. Plus, it adds a personalized, retro touch to my display.

Have you ever had an item inspire you to create something similar? I’d love to hear about your projects.

Thanks for reading—have a wonderful day!
