If you enjoy hosting but prefer spending time with guests instead of stuck at the stove, these garlic puff pastry twists are a fantastic option. They look elegant, taste great, and require minimal effort so you can enjoy the event as much as your visitors.

Ingredients

ingredients needed to make garlic puff pastry twists
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package instructions
  • 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter (or olive oil)
  • 2–3 garlic cloves, finely minced or grated (or 1 tsp garlic powder)
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan or other hard cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley or coriander, finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried Italian herbs (optional)

Notes on ingredients:

  • Puff pastry: Use store-bought sheets for convenience. Ensure the pastry is fully thawed so it rolls and twists without tearing.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic gives the best flavor; substitute garlic powder if needed and adjust to taste.
  • Herbs and cheese: Fresh parsley or coriander brightens the flavor. Experiment with cheeses—Parmesan, Pecorino, Gruyère, cheddar or mozzarella all work well.

Step by Step Instructions

Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Combine the melted butter (or olive oil) with minced garlic (or garlic powder), salt, pepper, and dried herbs in a small bowl.

roll the puff pastry and apply garlic butter

Roll the thawed puff pastry into a rectangle about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick.

Brush the garlic butter evenly over one half of the rectangle and sprinkle with grated Parmesan.

fold the puff pastry and slice to 1 inch thickness

Fold the other half of the pastry over the buttered, cheese-covered side to create a layered rectangle.

Cut the layered pastry into strips about 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide using a pizza cutter or sharp knife so they bake evenly and puff nicely.

Hold each strip at both ends and twist several times, then place the twists on the prepared tray, pressing the ends lightly to keep them secure.

Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until the twists are golden, puffed and crispy.

Optionally brush freshly baked twists with any remaining garlic butter for extra shine and flavor. Let them cool for about 5 minutes before serving.

These cheesy garlic twists are excellent dipped in cold sauces like pesto aioli, whipped ricotta, or a simple herbed yogurt. They make an easy, impressive appetizer for holidays or casual get-togethers.

Best Tips

  • Storage: Keep leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To restore crispness, reheat in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 3–5 minutes.
  • Make-ahead: Assemble the twists on a parchment-lined tray, cover, and refrigerate for a few hours before baking—handy for party prep.
  • Serving ideas: Serve warm with dips such as pesto aioli, whipped ricotta, or cheese dip. They also pair well with soups and salads.
  • Variations: Try different cheeses (Pecorino Romano, Gruyère, cheddar, mozzarella) and herbs (cilantro, basil) or add chili flakes for heat.
  • Cooking alternatives: You can bake the twists in a conventional oven, toaster oven, or air fryer. Use the same temperature and similar cooking time; watch closely so they don’t overbrown.
