Creamy Spinach Yogurt Dip: Lighter Recipe with Greek Yogurt

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

If you want a little extra green today (beyond the beer), here’s a simple, healthier spin on classic spinach dip. This version is lower in calories and rich in protein and calcium thanks to Greek yogurt. If you plan to drink alcohol, serve it with whole-grain bread to help slow alcohol absorption—drinking on an empty stomach is never a good idea.

As a snack or party appetizer, this dip pairs beautifully with vegetable sticks—carrots, colorful bell peppers, cucumber spears, and sugar snap peas—or a few seeded crackers.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen spinach (150 grams)
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 2 cups fat free Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp za’atar
  • 1/2 cup chopped parsley
  • 3 tbsp chopped mint

Instructions

  • Defrost the frozen spinach in the microwave and squeeze out any excess liquid. Chop if needed.
  • Crush the garlic with the sea salt using a mortar and pestle until it forms a paste. If you don’t have one, mince the garlic finely and press it with the flat side of a knife to release its flavor.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, lemon juice and za’atar. Stir in the garlic paste, then fold in the spinach and chopped herbs, reserving about 1 tablespoon of herbs to sprinkle on top.
  • Chill briefly if you like, then serve with whole-grain pita, pumpernickel, seed crackers, or vegetable sticks.

Notes

This dip develops more flavor after a few hours in the fridge, making it an excellent make-ahead option. Store covered for up to 3 days.
